This page, observed
- Built
- 20 Oct 2026, commit 28b2dbc
- Weight
- 89.4 KB of JavaScript and 18.7 KB of CSS in the first view, compressed, measured on the build of 17 Oct 2026. Measured
- Sun over Melbourne
- not computed until the page’s script runs, from your clock with the NOAA equations; no request was made. Measured
- The space
- 456 sentences and 4,231 words, TF-IDF to 50 dimensions, UMAP to 3, seed 1082. Method
A page that asks you to check its claims should let you check it. This one measures itself in your browser as you read and prints each number beside the budget the build set for it. The space behind it is lit by Melbourne’s sun, computed from your clock with the NOAA equations. None of these measurements is sent anywhere. This site’s own server reads where your connection comes from, once in this tab, and shows it only to you, in Your visit below; this site’s code keeps no copy, and Vercel, its host, logs each request as any host does.

First visit on this browser: the Last visit column fills in next time, from this browser’s own storage.
Measured: a measured outcome, with its method stated. Built: something designed and built; no outcome number is claimed unless shown. Method: a method described without a publishable number (yet). Project: a project’s own figure, not his outcome. Proposed: an estimate inside a proposal. Reported: a figure he reports, not independently shown here. Published: writing with its real date. Shipped: a product or system delivered to a client or users.

Claim
Source: Your browser's performance entries. Date: Measured now, on this visit. Scope: This page, this browser, this visit. Budgets are the build's; actuals are yours. Where a browser does not expose a figure, the table says so. Not shown: Your user agent or device memory: not recorded, not rendered.
A page that asks you to check its claims should let you check it. The table below is this page’s own trace: what it loaded, how heavy it was, when it painted and how quickly it answered your first input, each beside the budget the build set for it. Measured
The measurements come from your browser, now, and they stay in it. Nothing is sent anywhere; there is no analytics script and there are no third-party requests. You can download the trace as a file, and if you come back the table shows the previous visit beside this one, from this browser’s own storage.
Source: Your connection, as this site’s server read it from the headers Vercel, its host, adds to the request. Date: Once in this tab. Scope: Shown only to you. This site’s code keeps no copy and writes no log of it; Vercel, its host, records each request (with its address) in its own logs, as any host does. The distance and the time are worked out in your browser. Not shown: Where you are exactly. The place is where your network’s address is located, and a VPN or a mobile network can put it in another city.

Read from your connection by this site’s server once in this tab, and shown only to you; this tab keeps a copy until you close it. This site’s code keeps no copy and writes no log of it. Vercel, its host, records each request (with its address) in its own logs, as any host does.
Source: This page. Date: This build. Scope: The kinds every number on this page declares, and the settings this page keeps.
The kinds
Every number on this page carries one of these words. The word says what the number is before you read it.
Settings
Theme (light or dark), motion (Full, Reduced or Off), the stage shortcuts switch and Show all planes are this page’s settings. They are stored in this browser only, under the plain keys listed in the Raw plane, and they never leave it.
Method
Source: This site's build budgets. Date: This build. Scope: The budgets are targets the build is held to, not measurements of anything else. The actuals come from your browser.
What is read. The browser keeps a record of what a page cost it: navigation and resource timings, paint timings, layout shifts, long tasks and input delays. A PerformanceObserver collects them, and the build adds its own User Timing marks for the moments it cares about.
What it is compared with. The build’s budgets: first-view JavaScript at most 150 KB compressed; CSS at most 36 KB; fonts at most 160 KB; largest contentful paint within 2.5 s on a phone on 4G; interaction to next paint within 150 ms; cumulative layout shift within 0.02; total blocking time within 150 ms; zero third-party requests. Method Each row shows the budget beside the actual, and a browser that does not expose a figure gets the words “not exposed by this browser” instead of a blank.
What is kept. The last trace, in this browser’s storage, so a return visit can be compared with this one. Nothing is uploaded; the download button writes a file to your machine, not to a server. For this tab only, your address and place as this site’s server read them for Your visit, so the next page does not ask again.
What is read about you. Where your connection comes from, once in a tab. This site’s own server reads the address your request came from and the place that Vercel, its host, adds to the request (city, region, country, time zone and coordinates), and sends them back to you alone; no other service is asked. Your browser names the country in its own language and works out the distance to Melbourne and your local time. This site’s code keeps no copy and writes no log of any of it, and it never records or shows your user agent or device memory (the page’s libraries check the user agent in your browser, for known quirks of iOS and of a VR headset’s browser). Vercel, its host, records each request in its own logs, with its address and user agent, as any host does. A question you ask Appu goes to Google’s Gemini to write the answer; this site keeps no copy.
Raw
Source: src/lib/store.ts and the page transitions’ scripts in this site’s code. Date: This build. Scope: Every key this page may write to this browser’s storage: its local storage, kept until you clear it, and this tab’s session storage, gone when the tab closes. Nothing else is stored; no cookies are set.
What this browser stores for this page
| Key | What it holds |
|---|---|
| pref:theme | light or dark, if you chose one |
| pref:motion | full, reduced or off, if you chose one |
| pref:shortcuts | whether the stage shortcuts are on |
| pref:show-all-planes | whether every plane is shown inline |
| pref:sound, pref:quality | sound and frame-quality preferences, if a control for them is present |
| plane: followed by an instrument id | the plane you last chose on that instrument |
| obs:raw-seen, obs:raw-count | which instruments you have taken to Raw, and how many |
| trace:last | the previous visit’s trace, for the comparison column |
| session:visitor | this tab only: your address and place as this site’s server read them (city, region, country, time zone and coordinates), for Your visit, Appu’s greeting and the contact close’s sentence; or none |
| session:appu-prompts | this tab only: whether Appu has greeted you, how many prompts he has shown since, and whether you opened the chat |
| session:kerala-noticed | this tab only: whether the Kerala line’s cue has played and whether you opened the card |
| work:back | this tab only: the project a Back or All work link leaves, read once by the home page to shrink its picture into its tile |
| space:deep: followed by a page’s path | this tab only: whether you left that page below its first screen, so a return through the history waits for the space |
Close the tab and its session keys are gone; clear your site data and all of it is. None of it is sent anywhere.
Build
Commit 28b2dbc, built 20 Oct 2026, 09:23 UTC, production.
How the space was built
456 sentences (the project pages’ prose and summaries, the instruments’ prose and summaries, the essays’ titles and deks and the 2024 note) tokenised with a 120-word stop list and a light stemmer, weighted by TF-IDF over 1324 terms, reduced to 50 dimensions by truncated SVD and to 3 by UMAP (12 neighbours, minimum distance 0.15, seed 1082), scaled to the −1..1 cube; 4231 word points sit at their sentence with a seeded jitter of 0.045.
Budgets this page is built against
- First-view JavaScript 150 KB compressed or less, the space renderer 25 KB or less and loaded after the first paint; lazy chunks: LogLens 40 KB or less, Valuation 90 KB or less and the Appu instrument 100 KB or less, React included
- CSS 36 KB or less; fonts 160 KB or less, preloaded with size-adjusted fallbacks
- LCP 2.5 s or less on a phone over 4G, INP 150 ms or less, CLS 0.02 or less, TBT 150 ms or less
- Zero third-party requests; your address and place read by this site’s own server and shown only to you, in Your visit
- Lighthouse: Performance 90 or more, Accessibility 100, SEO 100, Best Practices 100
